Panjim/ Goa/ Bangalore/ Kochi/Kolkata, Jan 1 Festivities galore in various parts of the country as people came out in large numbers late on Wednesday night to usher in the New Year with zest.
Many seem to have put behind bitter memories of the recent Mumbai attacks to herald New Year 2009 in style.
Festive spirits flowed freely in Goa that virtually rocked despite the ban on the beach parties as people dance to music across restaurants and five star hotels located near the beaches.
"Very nice and its beautiful. It's a paradise here," said Suzan, a tourist.
The city of Bangalore was also abuzz with activity as both young and old took part in the festivities with gaiety.
Scores of enthusiasts, young and old, men and women and foreigners of Kerala experienced a different way of celebrating the New Year by burning the Santa Claus on the beach.
The tradition of burning a huge Santa has been prevalent in Kochi since ages as residents believe that it is done to mark the old year with an Old Man resembling Santa Claus and to welcome a New Year by burning it.
"I just come to Kerala for Christmas and New Year. It's really great. We burnt Santa Claus, we don't do that in England," said Rocky, a tourist.
Meanwhile, Kolkata was also decorated with lights, as the city came alive with the festive spirit and people celebrated the New Year with gusto.
Lavish parties were missing this year, with a heightened alert in place after the Mumbai attacks. (ANI)
