Rome, July 1 Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano has appealed to the politicians and media to observe a truce to ensure a smooth G8 summit. "It would be good, from here to the G8, given the delicacy of this huge international event, to have a truce in these controversies," The Telegraph quoted Napolitano, as saying. Though Napolitano did not specify what he was highlighting, speculations are rife about it involving Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's scandals. Berlusconi's estranged wife has publicly accused him of having an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old model and of using government aircraft to fly showgirls and models to his Sardinian villa for lavish parties. Berlusconi has denied all allegations and welcomed Napolitano's call. "We hope the president's invitation is taken up," Berlusconi said. Meanwhile, a senior member of the opposition Democratic Party, described the president's appeal very wise, but added that Berlusconi should be the first to embrace it. (ANI)
