New Delhi, Nov 1 Vice President Hamid Ansari on Sunday greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Guruparab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Devji.

In his message, Ansari said: "I convey my best wishes to the people of our country on the auspicious occasion of Guruparab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Devji. Guru Nanak Devji, the founder of Sikhism, is an apostle of universal love, piety and spiritual faith. His divine teachings guide us on the path of social harmony and unity."

"On this joyous occasion let us pray that his ideals of humanism and social equality inspire us to move towards a peaceful and just society," the Vice President added.

One of the biggest celebrations in the Sikh calendar, Guruparab, also known as 'Jyototsava', is celebrated on the full moon of Kartika.

To mark the event, a huge celebration takes place in Nankana Sahib (now in Pakistan)-the town of Guru Nanak's birth in 1469.

Other festivals celebrating Guruparab takes place at the spectacular Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. (ANI)
