North 24 Parganas (WB), Nov 3 truck drivers staged a protest here along the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Pargana district of West Bengal, blaming their Bangladesh counterparts of manhandling them at Benapole, a Bangladesh border town.

The drivers alleged that some of them were beaten up without any reason by goons in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Jasin Mondal, a truck driver said they were attacked by some 40 Bangladeshi drivers when they entered Benapole.

"We were 17-18 people, who had gone to Benapole. We were attacked by around 40 people there," Mondal added. The drivers said that around 12 of them were injured in the attack and local police station in Bangladesh refused to register a case.

Trade across the border was stopped following the incident.

The Indian customs department is in talks with its Bangladeshi counterpart to resolve the problem.

"This incident took place and the Assistant Commissioner of Customs (Petrapole, Indian border town) has called us to solve the problem and to restore export and import along the border. So we came here to discuss the issue," said Mentab Ali, Customs Superintendent, Petrapole.

The daily goods traffic includes to and fro movement of 300 trucks both ways along the Petrapole border check post in North 4 Parganas district. (ANI)
