Kolkata, March 4 (IANS) West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan visited Visva Bharati University, popularly known as Shantiniketan (abode of peace), in the state's Birbhum district and held meetings with senior university officials Thursday.

'The West Bengal governor, who is also the rector of the Visva Bharati University, came to Shantiniketan today on a scheduled visit. He interacted with several senior university officials and discussed various issues with them,' Visva Bharati University spokesperson Amitava Chowdhury told IANS by phone.

He said Narayanan also held a meeting with Vice-Vhancellor Ranjat Kanta Roy.

Asked if the university authorities informed the governor about Saturday night's brawl between two groups of students, Chowdhury said the officials had pointed out several issues to Narayanan concerning the Visva Bharati's administration.

'But we don't know what the university vice-chancellor and the governor discussed during their closed-door meeting,' he added.

A recent clash between two groups of students played spoilsport in the celebration of Basanta Utsav (spring festival) at Shantiniketan this year and it finally led to cancellation of a play Basanta Sunday evening.

The cultural programme organised Sunday morning was also curtailed following the students' clash that broke out late Saturday night at the university campus.

According to sources, some students were injured and artworks made under the direction of artist Nandalal Bose and housed at the hostel were damaged in the clash.

According to Raj Bhavan sources, Narayanan went to Shantiniketan Thursday on a two-day visit. Besides meeting Visva Bharati University officials, he will also hold meetings with Birbhum district authorities.
