Varanasi, June 5 (ANI): Students in Varanasi today marked World Environment Day by skating through the city to spread awareness about environmental issues.

Wearing green coloured clothes, the participants said that everyone should join hands to protect the River Ganges from pollution.

"Today, the River Ganges is very polluted and all of us can help save it. We should not throw plastic and other such waste material. If we work together, we can reduce pollution levels," said Sona Chaurasiya, a participant.

Participants also distributed pamphlets to educate people on ways to protect the environment.

" We should try to retain greenery. If we are able to do that, pollution levels will automatically reduce," said Rajesh Dogra, one of the organizers of the event.

India has some of the most polluted cities in the world, many of them continually shrouded by eye-stinging smog of noxious fumes that emit from automobiles and industry.

Climate experts fear the projected temperature rise could disrupt farming, raise sea levels by melting icecaps, and cause more extreme weather phenomena like hurricanes or droughts. (ANI)
