Patna, March 6 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has come out in open support for the women's reservation bill, putting the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) in a dilemma as party president Sharad Yadav has opposed the legislation.

'I am in support of the women's reservation bill in its present form, it should be pushed through soon,' Nitish Kumar told reporters here Saturday.

Kumar's support for the bill in its present form is a major setback for the lobby led by Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his own party president Sharad Yadav. They are demanding a quota for women belonging to backward castes and Muslims within the 33 percent.

Nitish Kumar said he does not agree with the stand of Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sharad Yadav.

'My stand is clear, I am for passing the bill in parliament,' Nitish Kumar said. The bill is to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha Monday, International Women's Day.

Nitish Kumar said he will speak with his party leaders including Sharad Yadav on the matter.

He made it clear that he supported the quota-within-quota demand for Other Backward Castes and Muslim women within the larger quota for women but it should not delay the bill.

'First, the women's reservation bill should get through without further delay. The quota-within-quota demand should not become a big hurdle,' he said.

Nitish Kumar said that Bihar was the first state in the country to reserve 50 percent seats in panchayats (village councils) for women. 'It was a big success and an inspiration for others to follow because it helped in empowerment of women,' he said.

Dear Mr Chief Minister,
I have learned your stand on the women reservation bill. It is incomprehensible that you are supporting the bill in its current form. Logically there must be reservation within reservation. If you doubt it, then you must be doubting general reservation too, which I don't hope from a politician of your position, who fortunately also belongs to backward community.
On surface it may look like it is your personal decision, but remember when you say something or do something, you are representing whole backward community in general and Kurmi in specific. You see the pattern. All yadav leaders in three party have risen to the occassion and you are giving a timid look to us. Are these Yadav leaders asking to scrap the bill, No. They are asking for justification.
I will tell you a story.
When I was employee of Infosys, one day there was hot discussion on reservation around 2006. those were the days when a lot of dharana and virodh pradarshan was going on nationwide for and against of reservation. So, in this debate one guy furiously taken side of forward caste cause. Later he came to me for consulting how to get caste certificate to get reservation for a seat in IIMs.
This is a very general scenario. People of non-forward committee are reluctant to show their identity, sometimes out of fear and sometimes out of fascination to show their statesmanship.
Now for whatever reason you are doing this, you should stop and change your stand. You will be remembered in any case and it is up to you, for which reason you want to be remembered., Rahul Kumar (3/9/2010 9:24:45 AM)
