Tumkur (Karnataka), May 7 (ANI): UPA Chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said that the Government has taken multiple steps to control inflation and promised a stable and common man's govt in Karnataka.

Campaigning in Tumkur and addressing a party rally there ahead of the first phase of Karnataka polls on Saturday, Gandhi rejected the BJP's allegation that her party was going soft on terrorism, and pointed out that various terrorist attacks had not taken place under Congress rule, but under BJP-led NDA rule.

"Our opponents are levelling all kinds of allegations against us. But people know the truth. We cannot tolerate this charge against us of going soft on terrorism. Everybody knows that Congress has always fought against terrorism and even sacrificed its leaders such as Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. We want to ask the BJP leaders as to who freed the terrorists during Kandahar hijacking. Whether it was attack on Parliament, attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat or attacks in Kashmir..all these attacks of terrorism happened under the BJP government. Whom are they trying to fool"? she said.

"We do not need certificate on patriotism from such people (BJP)", Gandhi added.

On the issue of price rise, she said the UPA Government is taking all measures to procure more wheat and rice so that the price stabilises.

Referring to the 33 percent Women's Reservation Bill that was tabled in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Gandhi said it was the "cherished dream" of late Rajiv Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners, Naveen Chawla and S Y Qureishi met leaders of all political parties in Bangalore today and reviewed poll arrangements in the 89 assembly segments which will go to vote on Saturday.

The Election Commission decided to impose a blanket ban on serving of liquor in Karnataka 48 hours before the end of polling and on the day of counting of votes to ensure free and fair assembly elections in the state. The Commission had earlier instructed observers and poll officials to specially look at possibilities of liquor flow from Goa into Karnataka.

The state will have a three-phased polling on May 10, 16 and 22. The counting of votes will take place on May 25. (ANI)
