New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Monday appointed special prosecutors for the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases and asked the trial court to wrap them up in six months.

Counsel for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Vikas Pahwa informed a division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw that senior advocates R.S. Cheema and Y.K. Saxena have been appointed to handle trial court cases, while he and Additional Solicitor General A.S. Chandiok would be looking after 1984 riot cases in the high court.

The court last week asked the CBI to appoint a special prosecutor for handling the case on the lines of the Gujarat riots case of 2002.

Standing counsel for the Delhi government Nazmi Wazhiri informed the bench that cases to which the state government is a party will be handled by Director of Prosecution B.S. Joon in the trial court and senior advocate H.J.S. Ahluwalia in the high court.

The court was hearing an NGO's public interest petition asking the court to appoint special lawyers for the 1984 riots case and hear them on a day-to-day basis.
