A ray of hope for handweavers- Initiative from Govt. of Rajasthan for the handloom industry New Delhi, Kota-doria sarees along with dress material of latest fashion and style were the eye stealers in the Rajasthan Handloom Exhibition concluded at the Rajasthan State Guest House, Chanakyapuri in the capital New Delhi on Sunday. The exhibition witnessed a turn over of around Rs.150,000. Mr. Naseeruddin Ansari and Mr. Munshiram Kachara, who were specially invited from the Kaithun area of Kota district, said that because of the fake versions by the powerlooms, the situation had become so grim that even after an entire day's hardwork, the weavers could hardly manage to make Rs.100 only, which at one point of time forced them to leave this occupation. But after the sustained efforts by the Rajasthan government, particularly the intiatives taken by the state Chief Minister, Mrs. Vasundhara Raje, kota-doria has resulted in international recognition for the art resulting in a ray of hope for more than 5000 artisans. He further added that there are around five thousand handlooms in the ten villages comprising the Hadauti region of Kota that are into the production of Kota-doria sarees and related dress material. In fact, the Kaithun district of Kota region itself houses two thousand handlooms, which produce around 500- 1000 sarees in a day on an average. These sarees have earned significant recognition abroad besides having a huge demand in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, to name a few. Drawing attention to a Zari saree made with one gram gold and forty percent silver, Ansari and Kachara said that it took two and a half months for the entire family to come up with the saree. The silk fabric is sourced from Bangaluru and the material for Zari from Surat, he added. Because of the zari, these sarees have got a good resale value too. The sarees are priced anywhere between Rs. 800- 25,000. Haji Mustakim added that his family has been engaged in the business from the past 15 generations. Recent times have been a little difficult, but the new designs have infused life into the trade, asserted Mustakim. Nayab Khan, Marketing Manager with Handloom Corporation, informed that the exhibition also houses tops, skirts and T-shirts and various other designs in apparels aimed at the younger generation and are the center of attraction apart from the famed Kota-doria sarees.
