Srinagar, Feb 9 (IANS) One policeman was killed when separatist guerrillas attacked a police station in north Kashmir's Sopore town Tuesday morning.

A senior police officer said guerrillas fired indiscriminately at the police station building with automatic weapons in Sopore town, 54 km from here, critically injuring a head constable of the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) unit. The cop has been identified as Muhammad Yusuf.

Yusuf was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The area around the building was surrounded by police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

Meanwhile, life elsewhere in Kashmir returned to normal after a week with shops, businesses and government offices re-opening and traffic plying on the roads.

Protests had erupted here Jan 31 when a 13-year-old youth was killed after being hit by a tear smoke shell in the old city while he was playing cricket.

Authorities had to impose an undeclared curfew in parts of the old city Feb 4 after violent protests rocked the city and other towns that left over 100 wounded.

Hundreds of people Tuesday morning held a rally demanding punishment for the paramilitary troopers allegedly involved in the killing of a 16-year-old youth, Zahid Farooq Sheikh at Nishat, in the city's outskirts.

The state government has already ordered an enquiry into the killing of the youth and the Kashmir divisional commissioner has been directed to submit the report within a week.
