London, Nov 9 A Brit couple won their combined body weight in beer after they aced a 50-metre wife-carrying contest.

The winners Oliver Milligan, 30, and Christina Davies, 37, were among ten couples who participated in the race at Hereford Racecourse, as part of the venue's annual Beer and Cider day.

Men were allowed to carry their women in piggyback style, in a fireman's lift, or upside down with their legs around the man's shoulders and arms around his waist.

Milligan and Davies won the competition using the piggyback method to receive their combined weight in beer.

"That is 24 stones worth of beer. I don't even drink much really, but I'm sure Christina will have a good go," the Telegraph quoted Milligan, as saying.

"I feel like I've just done the Grand National. I paced myself to start with but I could hear Christina shouting in my ear so I thought, we can win this."

He added: "I have done a bit of sprinting but it is a bit different having your girlfriend on your back in front of hundreds of people."

Davies said: "It was fun, I'm still catching my breath. I was petrified that he might drop me but he managed not to, thankfully."

Talking about the fun event, Richard Holland, General Manager at Hereford Racecourse said: "There are all manner of strange customs in the west of England - from cheese rolling and church clipping through to bread throwing and wassailing the apple tree.

"So we're just adding wife carrying to the mix for our major jump racing fixture of the autumn."

Although, the event is called a wife-carrying contest couples need not be necessarily married or be in a relationship to take part in it. The competition is open to all above the age of 18. (ANI)
