London, November 10 British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was said to have been involved in a phone bust-up with the mother of a dead soldier, whose name he misspelt in a handwritten letter.

Jacqui Janes, who lost her 20-year-old son Jamie last month in an explosion in Afghanistan, complained the Downing Street letter of condolence was full of mistakes, including the misspell.

The 47-year-old outraged mum accused the Premier of being "disrespectful" and "not caring enough" about British armed forces.

Brown later called to apologise to Jacqui, who recorded the conversation and handed over the tape to a British tabloid.

He apparently denied making the mistakes during the 13-minute call, laying the blame on his poor handwriting for any "misunderstanding".

"I didn't get the impression Mr Brown felt anything except anger and embarrassment that I made his mistakes public," the Sun quoted Jacqui as saying.

She added: "He has told the country he called to say sorry for any 'unintended mistake'.

"But he completely denied making any mistakes, blaming me for not being able to read his writing.

"And he certainly did not apologise. I wanted people to hear it so they could make up their own minds whether that was an apology - instead of the Downing Street spin on it." (ANI)
