Siliguri (West Bengal), Feb 12 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Friday slammed the movement by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) in Darjeeling Hills for a separate state and termed their protest as a 'sad affair'.

He urged the GJM representatives, who are demanding a Gorkhaland curved out of the region, to sit for talks.

'We are against the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state. We don't want division of Bengal. But we can give more autonomy and money to the hill council. We also want development for the people of Darjeeling hills but that doesn't mean we will allow creation of a new state,' Bhattacharjee said while addressing a party rally in Darjeeling district's Siliguri sub-division here.

'If there is no development in Darjeeling that is because of the former GNLF chief Subhash Gisingh. He should answer why irrespective of getting money from the state government he was incapable of working out development plans in the hills,' he said.

Bhattacharjee also blamed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre for not doing its bit to control the price rise of essential commodities.

'Our state is providing rice at Rs.2 per kg to BPL (below poverty level) card holders across the state. We are also trying to provide edible oil, sugar and potatoes through ration system to the BPL cardholders at a cheaper rate.

'We cannot sit idle if the central government does not take any initiative,' said Bhattacharjee.

The chief minister held a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early this month to discuss the issue of price rise.

This is saddening that the very concept of democracy is mis-understood in the Darjeeling Hills today.

Considering the history of GJJM, they seem to have zero-tolerance of the opposition.

It has been their policy of non-tolerance that has made them chase out all or opposing from Darjeeling Hills.

Just the news today says that GJJM will not allow participation of other parties in the discussion table is reflection of what anarchic ideology GJJM has built up through the so called “Intellectuals”.

Talking of his “Brigade of Intellectuals”, I doubt there capability to give any SANE advise. They are all opportunists and a bunch of hypocrites with limited understanding of the long term benefits of society.

Applying the illogical thinking of Darjeeling GJJM to the Indian polictical scenario, the UPA in power will have to chase out all the BJP,Shiv Sena,Bajrang Dal,(Opposition)out of India by burning and vandalising their houses.

“LK Advani house being burnt down by Opposition is what will happen” IF he had resided in Darjeeling in the current situation?

Where will the BJP go, to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh????, I suppose and live like refugees till the term of UPA is over. Isn’t this absurd and irrational? This might sound democratic to Bimal Gurung though.

Historically, this was done by the Hitler, he treated his opposition like vermins. But that was not democracy, was it?

The fate of opposition is a good reflection of how un-democratic and un-constitutional the GJM agitators are. The houses of any opposing citizen is vandalized and burnt down. They are currently all refugees somewhere in spite of having residence in the Darjeeling Hills.

Any democracy to survive needs a strong opposition to prevent dictatorship. Can we call Bimal Gurung , the Hitler of Darjeeling ??

Another relevant question as a subset of this is “Does Bimal Gurung has the credentials to represent the best interest of Gorkhali”.

If he in reality assuming he totally represents what the people of Darjeeling want, then, he should have no fear of any opposition at all.

Rather, welcome opposition that can correct his dictatorial mistakes.

Talking of his past-what was Bimal Gurung doing for 20 years for Subhash Ghising ? Why was he silent for 20 years?

I do not think he was bidding his time playing solitaire looking for a “Prashant Tamang” to upstage his Godfather.

If Ghising is to blame for the underdevelopment of the hills, so is Bimal Gurung as an Ex- member of GNLF for 20 long years.

What he will do to Darjeeling once he is in power is to be seen. I do not see any good in the future in the hands of a person soiled by Subhash Ghising Corruption for 20 long years.

I hope the rein of guiding “Darjeeling Hills” changes fast or we, Gorkhalis are doomed for ever. , Sabin Rai (2/25/2010 4:08:15 PM)
