Kolkata, Nov. 13 People from all walks of life participated in a procession to spread awareness on climate change here on Friday.

The procession was organized by the Kolkata Chapter of Cap the Gap, with an aim to ensure that a concrete and effective plan for reducing carbon emissions is put into effect after the forthcoming climate talks in Copenhagen.

"Eleven organizations including media houses, NGOs and several schools and colleges participated in the procession to create awareness on the need to reduce carbon emission," said Soumyajit Mahapatra, Secretary, Kolkata Chapter, Cap the Gap.

"From Kolkata's point of view also if we can reduce carbon emission, it would go a long way in safeguarding the environment," he added.

Ananya Bhattacharya, a participant, said: "Climate change is affecting every individual, every strata of society and it has now become imperative that everyone should jointly voice the need for action instead of mere debates on Climate Change and its consequences."

The participants also carried banners with slogans, 'reduce carbon, save earth', 'adopt cost effective construction technology, reduce heat-trapping, gas emission' etc.

One poster had a clear message 'environment is where you are, destroy it and nowhere you are'. By Ajitha Menon (ANI)
