Editors Guild condoles death of ex-resident editor of The Statesman

New Delhi, Aug.14 The Editors Guild of India has expressed its deep regrets over the demise of one of its members, D P Kumar, former Resident Editor, The Statesman and former Political Editor, Newstime, in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh on August 9.

In a condolence message, the guild said Kumar was awarded the prestigious Niemann Fellowship to study journalism at Harvard University, and during a long career as a reporter and editor, had covered major news areas including politics, governance and international relations.

The Statesman wrote: "His passing has been mourned in professional and political circles. It was with the erstwhile United Press of India that D P Kumar began his career, and then he moved to The Statesman. where he worked for over three decades. He represented this newspaper in Kathmandu for several years and was an acknowledged Nepal expert., havin written a few books on that country.

From Nepal, "DP" moved Chandigarh, later shifting to the capital where he served the national bureau of The Statesman. After a stint as the Chief of Bureau he was elevated as the Resident Editor, and retired in 1992. Subsequently he worked as Political Editor of Newstime.... DP was a professional of the old shool who worked most diligently, and never cut corners. He also helped groom a number of younger journalists who have proceed to make their own professional work"

The Guild conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Bindhya Sharma, Mr. Kumar's wife, and her family members. (ANI)
