New Delhi, June 15 (ANI): After receiving complaint that Gujjar women were beaten up by the police during their peaceful protests, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has decided to probe the matter.

The NCW received complaints from members of Gujjar community who have asked the commission to look into the matter.

"We will look into the matter and if any woman has been ill-treated by police then the commission would take required steps," NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas said.

Aurag Kasana and Sunil Kumar Bainsla had lodged the complaint on June 12.

"Women protesters had not done anything unlawful. But the police had beaten them mercilessly and levelled various charges against them. We have requested the NCW to conduct an independent inquiry to find out the truth in the matter," Anurag Kasana, the complainant said.

An NCW team is expected to visit Salwas, Moradi Bhavdarosu, Gudaroad, Aaspura and Kirathpura in Rajasthan to enquire the matter.

Protesting Gujjars have been demanding scheduled tribes (ST) status for the community.

The agitation has crippled road transport and normal life in and around many parts of the State. (ANI)
