Abohar (Punjab), Nov 16 Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) College in Punjab's Abohar city recently organized a youth festival that showcased country's diverse and vibrant culture, which included folk dances and music.

The event, aimed to preserve the age-old traditions and a multi-facet development of the youth attracted students from over 19 cities of the state.

"The main motive of the festival was to hone the talent in the youth along with studies because education is not about theoretical knowledge but all round development and it is only possible if the students participate in all kinds of activities along with the studies," said Vanita Singh, Principal of DAV College.

The event had participants who performed folk dances not only from Punjab, also the different forms from Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and various other states.

"I belong to Punjab, but I am in Hariyanvi dress to represent the culture of Haryana. I consider the culture of Punjab and Haryana to be equal and I am contributing to Haryana's culture by presenting Haryana's folk dance, I believe they will also do the same for my culture in the near future," said Manpreet Kaur, a participant from Mudki.

These festivals provide a platform to the youth to showcase their talent, encourage them to preserve traditions and bring them closer to their cultural roots.

Awninder Kaur, a participant from Muktsar, said: "The holding of such youth festivals is very good because the young generation is fast adopting western culture and forgetting Punjabi culture. These youth festivals connect us with our culture and traditions."

The students also performed to an energetic Bhangra performance. Youth festivals with 'folklore' and 'culture' as its main theme not only help in preserving the culture and traditions, but also keep the youth close to their roots. By Avtar Gill (ANI)
