London, March 17 (IANS) Britons have begun taking their first work-break at 10.20 a.m., reveals a survey. Half of the respondents admitted that their performance suffers if they didn't get a break.

The poll, carried out for National Lottery Scratchcards, showed that over half of those surveyed use the breaktime to put the kettle on, a quarter go online or text a friend while one in five gossip with colleagues, Daily Express reported.

The earliest breaks were taken in Glasgow at 9.53 a.m. while Londoners and the Welsh wait until after 10.30 a.m. before stopping.

At least 40 percent of the respondents claimed they try to work faster to get some free time, and half admitted performance suffers if they do not get a break.

Taking exercise during breaks was a good way to boost concentration, while looking at dream holidays would also spur them on, said behavioural expert Judi James.

'Self-motivational techniques are vital to get us through the day and to help us achieve more,' she was quoted as saying.
