All news channels have a duty to share the responsibility of public service broadcasting, says Secretary, Information & Broadcasting, Smt. Asha Swarup. Delivering the keynote address at the Indian News Television Awards 2007 event today, she said that a lot of positive action is going on in various spheres of social/community activity around the country and this needs to be given due space in media coverage. Success stories at the grass root level would motivate others and provide role models to emulate, she said. Smt. Swarup said that media has a legitimate right in its choice of coverage and reporting but facts must not drown in the commentary and analysis. No doubt, news has to be presented as it happens, but accuracy and impartiality has to be ensured. She emphasised that trivialization of news and current affairs in the race for capturing viewership cannot be justified. The electronic media has to self regulate for content since the damage once done through it cannot be undone, she added. Smt. Swarup said that the proposed independent broadcast regulator and Broadcast Regulatory Bill will be in the overall interest of the development of media in the country. On sting operations by news channels, she said that the Government has no intention to meddle with the media’s right and manner of news gathering, but individual privacy cannot be violated.
