Assembly polls: Initial trends show Congress sweep in three states

Mumbai/Haryana/Itanagar, Oct 22 The ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading in 126 Assembly seats in Maharashtra, according to initial trends.

It is also quite well in Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh.

In Maharashtra, the Congress-NCP alliance appeared set to retain power for a second consecutive term with its candidates leading in 119 of the 288 Assembly constituencies in the state.

Jadhav Bhaskar Bhaurao of the NCP has won Guhagar seat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena combine is ahead in 85, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in 13 and others in 39 constituencies.

In the Amravati seat, Congress nominee and President Pratibha Patil's son Raosaheb Shekhawat was trailing behind party rebel Sunil Deshmukh by 2,532 votes.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who is leading in Bhokar constituency, said: "This victory is the victory of Congress-NCP team."

In Haryana, the Congress has won three seats and has established lead in 38 seats in the 90-member Assembly.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is leading in 23 and the BJP in 6 and others in 17 seats.

Former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala of INLD is trailing in Uchana Kalan against Birender Singh of the Congress.

The Congress was leading in Uchana Kalan, Ambala City, Ambala Cantt, Ferozepur Jhirka, Israna Reserve, Panipat City, Sadhaura and Tohana.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress has won 11 seats and leading in six in the 60-member house.

Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and two other Congress candidates have already been elected unopposed. (ANI)
