London, June 23 British tennis player Andy Murray stands to bag millions of pounds in financial gains if he wins this year's Wimbledon trophy and follow it up with successive Slam wins, however he has miles to go before he can match up to his main competitors.

Murray, one of the favourites for the historic Grand Slam can gather the 850,000 pounds prize money, apart from the sizeable monetary gains that could be made off the court.

However he will still be a considerable distance behind the biggest earners in tennis such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

"He needs to become a global icon. Winning Wimbledon would help but he would need to do that consistently, and to be able to win the kind of huge figures you can potentially earn in tennis you need a substantial following in the US," Sky news quoted Michael Sterling of Global Sponsors, as saying.

Though Wimbledon will put Murray in the big league, but to be compared with the big stars he must manage to earn between 3 million pounds to 7 million pounds a year, which would require him to win successive competitions, say another three Grand Slams.

"His consistency in reaching the latter part of competitions has enabled him to become a more recognisable figure globally, but it's not sufficiently strong to attract greater sponsorship from abroad," Sterling added.

Murray's earnings both on and off the court have risen steadily, but have been around half of what Nadal and Federer have earned this year. (ANI)
