Islamabad, August 23 (ANI): Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Saturday announced its Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's name for the post of Pakistan's president.

Central leader of PPP, Senator Raza Rabbani announced his name at a press briefing held here at Zardari House.

"Asif (Ali) Zardari has accepted to contest the election for the office of president of Pakistan after the party unanimously drafted him to do so," The News quoted Rabbani as saying.

"The coalition partners have been informed about the decision of the party," he added.

Rabbani also said that because of Zardari's struggle the country could get rid of dictatorship of General (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf.

He said the tough struggle of democratic forces made it possible to rid the country of his dictatorship.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman and PPP Chief Whip in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah were also present at the press briefing.

Rabbani said the PPP would never compromise on its principles. "Now anyone with an intention to disturb the democratic set up will have to think a thousand times before he takes any such step," he added.

In an answer to a question, he said right now we could not give any time frame for the restoration of the judges.

The decision to abolish the 17th amendment of the Constitution will be made after the presidential elections, he said. (ANI)
