Dharamsala, June 25 The Tibetans-in-exile staged a demonstration in protest against the mining operation in Tibet by a multi national company named Continental Minerals, a subsidiary of Hunter Dickinson.

The protest was a part of the global campaign demanding Continental Minerals to cease all mining operations in the region of Shethongmon in Tibet.

According to Tenzin Cheodon, Programme Director of the Students for Free Tibet, the mining companies in the free world should operate in Tibet or any part of the world according to the international norms whereas in Tibet they are not following it as per the prescribed global norms.

"With the mining in Tibet, Continental Minerals and other foreign mining companies inside Tibet are not following the international rules. The Tibetan people are not consulted and they are not benefiting from the mining inside Tibet. There is a whole environmental destruction going on in Tibet," Choedon said.

With several minor mining companies engaged extensive operations in Tibet, the residents as well as Tibetans-in-exile and environmentalists have expressed grave concern at these developments.

They have opined that these trends pose serious threat to the highly fragile ecosystem of Tibet.

Tibet relies on 10 major rivers as the prime sources of water and these include the Rivers Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Indus. (ANI)
