New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) Despite being the European champions, England are not considered as the title favourites for the hockey World Cup. But captain Ben Hawes feels that the underdogs tag will work in their favour.
'A lot of people think that our victory in the European Championships was a fluke. But they are mistaken. If we are not considered favourites, then it is hardly going to make any impact on the performance of the team. Being the underdogs tag will obviously work in our favour,' said Hawes.
Over the years, England have proved to be India's nemesis. They knocked India out of the 2008 Beijing Olympic competition in Santiago, Chile, as the eight-time Olympic champions missed their first Games since 1928.
Hawes said that the biggest test for his team will be against India.
'Playing India in their own backyard will be the test for our team. We had a good preparation and hopefully we will be able to do better here,' he said.
The English captain also said that besides India, they are also eagerly awaiting their clash with Australia.
'We haven't met them in 23 years. So it will be an interesting battle between England and Australia,' he said.
Hawes said that his team's strategy wil be defence, but added that they have to watch out against Pakistan.
'Pakistan are good at counter-attack, but we also have a great defence,' he said.
