Bhopal, May 27 (ANI): The medico legal wing of the Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Bhopal has earned dubious fame for the thousands of human skulls and skeletons in its custody.

In the absence of claimants for dead bodies, no last rites have been performed and consequently, the skeletal remains have been put in sacks.

According to officials, most of the referrals come from Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. Several other States too seek the assistance of Gandhi Medical College experts.

The doctors here have proved to be expert coroners. Police from other states also refer death cases they are not able to solve.

Usually, the dead bodies are handed over to relatives once the medical team narrows down the cause of death.

The medico legal wing is the only organisation that has the maximum number of human skeletons in the country. For the sake of record, there are 1401 skeletons stored and preserved in the building.

"Several times we have managed to cremate hundreds of bodies together. Presently, we have several skeletons in the institute. We also help the students by providing them with skeletons for research. Recently, a student from Australia came here to do research on Aryans and he took the help of these skeletons for his research," said Dr. D. K. Salpadhi, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital.
