Srinagar, Apr 29 (ANI): Football players in Jammu and Kashmir are busy preparing for the Santosh Trophy tournament to be held in the state next month after a long wait of nearly 30 years.

As many as 35 teams from across the country are expected to showcase their soccer skills in the 62nd edition of the tournament.

"The tournament was last held here in 1985. We will get to see major players like Baichung Bhutia and Mehrajuddin. We will get considerable exposure," said Zubair Ahmad, a soccer player.

Preparations are on in full swing for the big event. The sports authorities are getting the grounds ready and players are practicing to give their best performance in matches.

The government has made an investment of over 15 million rupees to provide adequate facilities at the grounds.

"Since 2006, the administration has been trying to hold a mega event like Santosh Trophy. We have been building infrastructure since 2006. Now, the infrastructure is ready and from May 25 our dream will turn into a reality," said Zameer Ahmed Thakur, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association.

The 62nd edition of Santosh trophy, the only inter-state football championship will commence on May 25.

Earlier, Srinagar had hosted the 35th edition of the Santosh Trophy in 1978 when Goa won the tournament, defeating West Bengal 2-0. (ANI)
