London, Oct 31 Legendary footballer George Best's son, Calum, has said that his father after downing wine and brandy in a drunken rage beat him.

"He grabbed me by the throat, picked me up against the wall. He was shouting, 'You're not my kid, get out of here, you piece of s***.'"

Calum (29) who moved to LA realised his dad was an alcoholic when he was just 11 and George left him alone in a hotel as he went on a 24-hour bender, The Sun reports.

Calum said on BBC1 documentary "Brought Up By Booze": "I have to believe he wouldn't have abandoned me if he'd been sober."

Calum admits they were not emotionally close, though they often got drunk together as he grew up. He said: "Our relationship was me, him and alcohol."

Calum was 24 when his dad died of liver failure aged 59 in 2005.

He tells the Children In Need documentary, out on November 11: "I wondered, did my father choose alcohol over me?"

"It doesn't mean my dad didn't love me. I still feel blessed to be my father's son," he said. (ANI)
