Melbourne, Dec 31 The Outback state of Australia, Alice Springs, is to be outed as the lesbian capital on national television. The television documentary takes a look at the town's culture of same-sex love, with residents estimating its population to be made up of 25,000 lesbians. Destiny in Alice, a 25-minute co-production by the ABC and CAAMA, says the town became a "haven" for lesbians after several hundred women marched on the Pine Gap intelligence base in 1983. "Many of participants in the protests were lesbians who came, saw and decided to stay," the Northern Territory News quoted the ABC as saying. "Since then, the town of Alice Springs has become a haven for lesbians," it added. Alice mayor Damien Ryan said he didn't have a clue how many lesbians there were in the town. "Nobody has ever done a census," he said. Alice's deputy mayor Murray Stewart said the title of lesbian capital of Outback Australia was reasonable. "Per capita, we're very well represented by lesbians," he said. "And I don't care less," he added. (ANI)
