New Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday demanded that the central government bring the land acquisition amendment bill in the ongoing monsoon session of parliament.

Party leader Gopinath Munde said the bill should be brought in the remaining days of the monsoon session.

He said that Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley had participated in the march to parliament by farmers from Uttar Pradesh, demanding higher compensation for their lands taken for building the Yamuna Expressway.

Munde said the party will meet Speaker Meira Kumar and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to demand that the bill be brought this session.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured a delegation of Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh Wednesday that the land acquisition amendment bill and rehabilitation and resettlement bill will be brought in the next session of parliament.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Bill 2009 and Land Acquisition Amendment Bill, which were passed by the Lok Sabha in February 2009, lapsed as the term of the house came to an end.

The bills have faced resistance from the Trinamool Congress, an ally of the Congress in the United Progressive Alliance government.
