Berlin, Sep 1 (DPA) The noisy vuvuzela trumpet which featured prominently among fans at the World Cup football in South Africa was Wednesday outlawed by the ruling body UEFA for its events such as Euro 2012 qualifiers, the Champions and Europa League.

UEFA said in a statement it had told its 53 member federations that the vuvuzela 'may not be brought into stadiums at matches in UEFA competitions' in an effort 'to protect the culture and tradition of football in Europe - singing, chanting etc.'

It added: 'The magic of football consists of the two-way exchange of emotions between the pitch and the stands, where the public can transmit a full range of feelings to the players.

'However, UEFA is of the view that the vuvuzelas would completely change the atmosphere, drowning supporter emotions and detracting from the experience of the game.'

The noisy vuvuzelas had effectively cancelled out all crowd noise during the World Cup although UEFA said that 'in the specific context of South Africa, the vuvuzela adds a touch of local flavour and folklore.'

Some television networks used vuvuzela filters during World Cup broadcasts and some European clubs have imposed vuvuzela bans in their stadiums.
