Born in Calcutta on 16th November 1952, Dr. Om Kumar Harsh possesses three research degrees, namely Ph.D., D.Sc.(Physics) and Master of Electrical Engineering by research from Australia. He has also completed three Masters Degrees namely in Physics, Engineering (Australia) and Computer Science (Australia). He also possesses a post graduate diploma in Instrumentation from Australia. In addition to these, Dr. Harsh has also guided a dozen Ph.D. students and published around eighty (80) research papers in journals of International repute in the field of Plasma Physics, X-Rays, Chemical Shift, Software Engineering, Distance Education and Internet technologies.
Dr. Harsh has a wonderful academic career of working as an academician in all the three fields namely Physics, Engineering and Computer Science. He has also done his research work with four internationally recognized scientists including Professor K.S. Srivastava, Professor R.N. Singh, Professor B.K. Agarwal and Professor Martin Green. It should be noted that Professor R.N. Singh led the Indian Delegation to tour the Europe and US for the scientific exploration in India while Professor Martin Green is one of the possible Noble Prize winner candidate.
In a ceremony at the Kanpur University, ex-President of India and sitting Vice-President, Dr. K.R. Narayanan, awarded the first Doctor of Science degree to Dr. Harsh in 1990. It should be noted that earlier the Kanpur University conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree to Professor Sir C.V. Raman.
Research papers of Dr. Harsh have widely been used across Europe and American continents; Eminent International Scientist and late Professor B.K. Agarwal of Allahbad University (who was the research supervisor of Dr Harsh) has cited his important research papers in his book published from Springer-varlog (West Germany).
Dr. Harsh has widely been invited by various universities around the world to deliver his research talks. One of his most important lectures was delivered at the Australian National University, Canberra in November 2000 which is available on the Web. He has been the member of the various international committees.
Dr. Harsh has also been engaged in consultancy work where he has been utilizing his overall knowledge in the fields of Physics, Engineering, Computing and Instrumentations. His research work in Plasma Physics, X-Rays, Hydrodynamics, Scattering and Web Engineering and Software Engineering, highlight his ability of dealing and multiple disciplines.
Dr. Harsh has served at I.I.T. Delhi, I.T. BHU, Lucknow University, Kanpur University, University of New South Wales in Sydney, Monash University and University of South Australia. Dr. Harsh also has industrial experience in Australia e.g. Compaq Computers, Binary Systems etc. At present, he is also been associated with the University of New England. He has been a member of various Academic and Industrial committees, and has presided national and International conferences.
Dr. Harsh has taught a wide range of subjects starting from Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering and Instrumentation. In addition to above, Distance Education Technology and Indian Astrological System have also fascinated him. Recently, some of his research papers in Distance Education have been published in the International Journals.
Dr. Harsh left India in August 1994, and since then he has been serving in various organisations in Australia. He has also worked in Mohan University, Malaysia.
He has supervised excellent research students who are working in various positions across Australia, India and US. One of his research students is the current member of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission while one has been working as a senior research scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
He has also written and edited couple of general articles published in the various magazines and newspapers across the globe. In the beginning of his career, Dr Harsh was awarded Senior and Post-doctoral research fellowship by the Council of Scientific and Industrial research, New Delhi, India. In the early stage of his Ph.D. research work, the New Mexico State University of United States of America offered him a research fellowship.
Dr. Harsh was also awarded Von Humboldt fellowship to work in the West Germany in 1989, however, due to shortage of funds (as a consequence of German Unification) he could not avail it.
He has also been selected as a Professor & Dean to work at the Prestigious US Institute at the Dubai. In addition, a University in Papua New Guinea also offered him a position in the field of Computer Science.
Dr Harsh is widely involved with various universities of UK, USA and South Asia for the courses development, articulation agreement and various other academic activities. His present research work is on "Software Cost Estimation and Reuse Techniques" which is a valuable tool for the cost saving strategies for building software. He had also been made an effort to extend his techniques to the "Missile Technology" during the year 2005.
