Rail services resume in Karachi

Karachi, Jan 1 (ANI): Five days after rioters torched trains and uprooted tracks following the killing of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, rail services in Karachi resumed on Tuesday.

"The Karakorum express has left for Lahore under tight security provided by the military, rangers (paramilitary) and police," The News quoted senior railway official Mir Mohammed Khaskheli, as saying.

Another train will depart for Peshawar at 10:00 pm (1700 GMT), general railway manager Asad Saeed said.

Saeed went on to say that due to communication system problems and signal snags, the rail service was not restored on Monday.

On Sunday, Railway Minister Tariq Mansoor admitted that the rail network suffered losses of at least 19 million dollars when 20 train engines and 140 coaches were destroyed in the unrest. (ANI)
